On Tuesday, we covered the topic of decolonization once again to clarify our final projects. Rod, Kim, and Jeremy taught the class about the 7 L's. If you don't remember, the 7 L's are the things impacted by colonialism. The L's were:
1. Language : In the process of decolonization, the language of one's country usually gets lost, forgotten, or altered. In the Philippines' case, their main dialect is Tagalog. But because of decolonization, the Philippines now has a variety of dialects which was the alteration of the language. 2. Labor : The subject to benefit dominant class/coerced to work certain jobs to survive 3. Love : Dominant class influences how to love/what you're attracted to 4. Land : Spaces and places are enforced and managed by the dominant class 5. Life : To destroy a country's culture, identity, ideology, and spirituallity 6. Legacy : The destruction of histories, her-stories, and our-stories 7. Liberty : NO freedom In order to decolonize, we must go back to language, labor, love, land, life, and legacy to reconstruct the heritage. For instance, language can be remembered so we can also begin teaching it. For labor, we can organize plans, love can be demonstrated by loving ourselves and to rethink what love should look like. Land can be critically taken under control, and life & legacy can be remembered by valuing our own history. From the 7 L's, we can easily see how one or more of them can be incorporated into our mind, body, and soul final projects. The process of decolonization can come in any of these forms and it's up to us to show how they're incorporated with one another. |
