Rates of Diabetes are drastically higher in people of color. In a film about Diabetes and it's relationship with Native Americans, it shows the eery truth about the hand of power. Coincidentally, we see parallel after parallel with the Filipino community.
-Stress chemicals (which are severely higher in people living in communities of poverty), increase blood sugar. = Filipinos with low health -Water/Land=Life -Their way of life prior to colonization kept Native Americans healthy = Filipinos healthy before colonization, began to embrace sugary/fatty canned foods These are concepts that we have constantly talked about in class. For example, Native Americans were "compensated" through a food program. They were supplied with very fatty unhealthy foods and vegetables weren't available until years after the program began. The thing to note here, is that not only was the food unhealthy but it was culturally different from what Native Americans traditionally ate. "Fried bread" was one of the results of this. They made do with what they had. As a result, it became a part of their culture. Similarly, Filipinos began to adore canned food and now we have the correlation of SPAM with Filipinos. Multiculturism assists the hand of power to keep people of color in a subservient and weak position.
