10 Chairs ExerciseOn Thursday, we did an exercise called 10 Chairs which focused on world population and wealth. Each chair represented 10% of the world's population and wealth, so 10 chairs equals 100% of both. We didn't have chairs, so we used papers as representations, and at each piece of paper, a student read an excerpt from Eyes of the Heart (2000). Some things mentioned were that 1.3 billion people lived on less than a dollar a day and that the planet was experiencing unprecedented economic growth. I thought this information was really shocking because I spent more than a dollar if I wanted to a purchase a bottle of water that would only last me a few hours and that we've never experienced economic growth before! The students also look the paper and began ripping them corresponding to what they read on the paper. This represented that sometimes a whole chunk of the population had a certain amount of wealth- people who were poor and in poverty were so heavily populated but had little money to support and vice versa for the wealthy. This meant that the poor never had enough resources and even fought with one another to survive. Free-ranged Chickens & EconomyJeremy also touched on the topic of free-ranged chickens- a way of raising chickens so they are not caged, it is supposed to be more humane. We would assume that making them free would be better, but it was actually the opposite. The chickens were hurting each other in the most inhumane ways because there was either not enough room for them or it was too hot. This relates to the 10 Chairs activities in the sense that the population would hurt each other to survive. The only difference is, is that we see that there is a problem in the animal kingdom and say "There needs to be something done," but we can't do that in our own human economy/ society. Why? I think it's easier for us to change the lifestyles/ conditions of animals than it is for ourselves because we don't want to admit there is something seriously wrong.
