Daly City - PanelOn Tuesday, Jeremy Villaluz, Sonny Vegara, and Dawn Mabalon were on a panel talking about Daly City, specifically how it has become the home of many Filipina/o families, and how gentrification is affecting the community. There were many layers to conversation. Just as Jeremy said, Daly city is this suburbanized area for white people and once the brown people moved in, the white people left. Which Dawn mentioned how white neigborhoods is what keeps property value up. Hence, many places in the bay area are getting gentrified, and more white and tech people are moving in, pushing many families out. Especially many Filipino/a families in Daly City. Jeremy, Sonny, and Dawn also gave a brief history of the late 60s and early 70s and why nurses and medical technicians were very popular at this time. They also talked about how Daly City is known to be this "dead" place. In addition, there showed a couple of Jeremy's art to further get their point across.

MigrationOn Thursday, Jeremy showed us a documentary on how Stockton, California became a home for many young Filipino men migrating from the Philippines. The reason for this is they wanted to achieve the American Dream and send money to their families back home. Many of them found themselves doing agricultural work earning small amounts of money. | MarriageAlthough many Filipino men came to the U.S., only a few women came from the Philippines with a ratio of only 14:1. The scarcity of Filipino women led to the men marrying white women by eloping to other states. |
