Get to know Char...I’m Charlette Madriaga, but you can call me char. (sh -ar) I am 23 years old and still trying to get my life together. I’m a Filipina living in a small town called Half Moon Bay. When my friends asked me why I don’t live in Daly city, I used to jokingly tell them that my parents got lost and settled in Half Moon Bay instead. However, I feel blessed to be living here. Although it’s small, it’s very peaceful and the beach is walking distance. I am the second child out of the four and the only one living at home. (Trying to save up, duh!) Spring 2016 is my last semester at Skyline until I can graduate in May for my Associates in Allied Health. To be a nurse is what I want to be in the future. (Goodluck to me!) I am a part time caregiver/ physical therapist and a nanny during the week. Working out and being outdoors is what I do to release stress. EATING helps too! Trying out new yummy food places is one of the many things I do with my boyfriend or friends. I think I am a pretty chill person, don't be afraid to say hi =) "Live life, and dance to your own beat." I chose this quote because I feel like people at my age who don't currently have it all figured it out doesn't mean they won't make it. Not all wanderers are lost. Trust your struggle. To me, community is a group of people who share similar interests. Kind of like the people who are taking this class. Like me, I would like to know more info about my roots and where I came from. Knowledge is power! Get to know Mary... Hey my name is Mary and this is my second year at Skyline. My family and I are first generation Filipino immigrants so I grew up in San Francisco. I got a chance to grow up around different cultures, but never really learning what it means to be Filipino. Hopefully from taking this Kababayan class my idea of self and identity as a Filipino is found. As of now I have an undeclared major, so the plan is to get my associates degree and eventually transfer off to SF state. As a student I'm open to communicate with others and always work for the betterment of the group. I enjoy making art projects and going to sporting events with my friends and family.I am a true Harry Potter fan and the books were a big part of my childhood. So a quote that defines me is " Always" by Severus Snape this quote basically means unconditional love, he was a true hero and swore his life to protect Harry Potter. And for the Potterheads out there to continue on to support HP. Get to know Adrienne...So hey guys, my name is Adrienne DeGuzman but call me Adrienne, of course. I was born and raised in Daly City which is not too far from Skyline, which I love. I don't have the longest commute of my life unlike when I went to College of San Mateo for my first year of college! I am currently a student attending my fourth semester overall at community colleges of Skyline and San Mateo. Back in high school, I had a lot of ambitions and wanted to be a lot of things. Having taken Forensics and seeing my friends take those creative arts, cooking classes, and more, I wanted to be a CSI Investigator, perhaps an FBI, or an interior designer, chef, and others. At the moment, I am leaning more towards the business area, specifically management because I want to work within the music or acting industry. Another one of my ambitions is to own a small company with somewhere where we plan events and cater to their needs, such as birthday parties, weddings, and others. It is somewhat close to what I've always been interested in, is interior design. You get to set up a lot and decide what could be right for this and that. Overall, I'm a very open minded person and love making friends. I can either be chill, watch some Netflix, sit around and eat pizza all day or even go out for cool, wild adventures! What does community mean to me? Community to me means to build healthy and strong relationships, friendships, partnerships with the people around you. I believe that the people we surround ourselves with have a great impact in our lives, whether good or bad, and shapes you into the person you are today. To have a good community where we bring each other up rather than down is my goal. Get to know Bruno...Hey what's up guys my name is Bruno Abarquez and this my first year out here at Skyline. I'm Filipino and I was born in Daly City then I moved out to South City while I was growing up. I honestly consider both cities to be my stomping grounds since I basically grew up in both cities. Throughout my whole childhood I was usually hanging out at Gellert Park or skating through the streets of Daly City with my friends and family. As for what I want to do with my life that question is left unanswered. My major is business but I'm not so sure if I still want to pursue it at this point. I'm kind of just taking classes that grab my attention which can hopefully give me an idea of what I want to do. At first I wanted to be a chef ever since I was a little kid but now it doesn't really grab my interest as much as it did when I was little. Right now my biggest interest is music, it is always involved in everything I do so maybe I can end up having a job that involves music? I don't know one day I'll figure it out. A quote that defines me is "change is inevitable so cherish the time you have". Everything is bound to change so appreciate the people you got and enjoy their company. Now what community means to me are just people who want to help you out and are looking out for each other. It is kind of like your friends or family you know just checking up on you and building stronger relationships with each other Get to know Hazel... Hey there! My name is Hazel Arines and its my last and final semester at skyline. I look forward to pursuing my education in the major of public health. For both of my parents, my twin sister and I are the first generation of American Filipinos. For majority of my childhood I lived in San Francisco. I enjoy spontaneous adventures, black cherry gelato specifically by talenti & dope music. "Wake up and smell the roses" Sometimes we get to caught up in the world and we forget to realize what really matters. Appreciate the simplicity and beauty of life. Every second of life is a blessing. Get to know Princess... Hi everyone. I'm Princess Barquilla Tuason. 22 years old. This is my second semester here in Skyline. I currently don't have a major yet, since I still don't know what I want to do. I grew up in a typical Filipino family, with my lolo and lola who used to tell me be to be more girly in a way that I have to be feminine, submissive and quiet but It's my nature to question a lot of thing and I guess, I always have that rebel side in me which opposes to everything they want me to be. I always try something they don't want me to do, to kind of answer my question: "why don't they want me to do this and that?" I don't always agree with what our teachers are teaching us right now, maybe because I just came here two years ago and I don't really know what Filipino-American history is. I think that white supremacy only exist when you believe it does exist and it will only affect you if you let it affect you. Learning our history is good, it can help us figuring out what and why the present is happening, and help us decide what our future can be and not let "history repeats itself". Again, I'm Princess and I believe that "You should not let society define who you are. You can be what you want to be." I have always been proud of who I am(as a woman and as a Filipina including my "filipino accent, values and traditions"). I listen to other people's criticism but I don't really care most of the time. At the end of the day, nobody can live my life for me but only me. :D
