Thats my brief Bio and if there is one quote that works for me it's "The bigger you are the harder you'll fall" -Goku
In class on November 17, 2015 we were split into two groups. The two groups were males and females. The males goes to their group and the females went to their group. The main purpose of this activity is to define what it is to be a male and female. What are the things that are placed upon a gender to make them a male or female. For example, on the male list they wrote down "can't wear pink". The reason why is because pink is seen as a color for a female. On the female side they put down "Daily life Aka: House Wife". The female put that down because they are said to take care of the children and the house while the males are working for the money.

On Thursday 10/22 we discussed the topic of Cultural Reproduction which is "the transmission of existing cultural values and norms from generation and generation. It refers to the mechanism by which continuity of cultural experience is sustained across time." Most of us are drawn to, practice, and are inspired by other cultures. It's how we dress, what we eat, through dance, music, etc. We watched most of an episode of Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown and in it visits southern California and the people whose cultures were inspired by others and those around them. Koreatown, which is one of the biggest and most popular neigborhood's in LA, was once destroyed. It soon made a huge comeback and within the neighborhood, the now popular food chain of food trucks and one of the well knows truck Kogi (founded and owned by Roy Choi) was created. It serves many food that is a fusion and Korean and Mexican cuisine. Later on in the episode we learned about an artist who is very much inspired by many different and expresses that through his art pieces and his choice of food. That artist is David Choe. His pieces are anything but the ordinary and he loves food chains of different cultures, such as Sizzler and Jollibee. Mechanisms That Sustain Culture:
Things Impacting Culture (or maintaining)
There is a strong relationship between cultural reproduction and the Filipino/a community because Filipinos are often drawn to other cultures such as Hawaiian, Mexican, etc. Culture spreads and becomes modified through generations as a way to also sustain it. We dance all sorts from different cultures, eat their foods, dress, and practice alike and vice versa. -Franchesca Le Flame Presentation: Chapter 2, Narrative of Decolonization from the Filipino Perspective 10/24/15 Tuesday Le Flame taught the class on chapter 2 these were three of their narratives: Narrative of Decolonization from the Filipino Perspective Filipino Consciousness under the Americans was further deepening of the colonial consciousness that the Spaniards had implanted. This time, however, inputs of information and successful adaptation of American values gave the impression of the positive development and improvement in the sense that the people were able to benefit from the wider contact with the world of ideas. But in relative terms, the new cultural development only produced variations in ignorances. ( Strobel, p. 50-51) Narrative of Decolonization from the Filipino Perspective (Conti) Indigenous Psychology is strongly committed to the development national identity and consciousness Indigenous Psychology has developed psychological terms using Philippine languages The core concepts are Kapwa, loob, damdam, paninindigan, hiya, amor propio, and pakikisama. Other's Counter-Narrative /Language as a Site of Ideological Structure Language can become an oppositional force and an affirmative force; it can create new ways of suppressed memories. Therefore language can also create new identities capable of challenging the conditions that negate the voices, desire, and histories of silenced people's." (P.54) This week of 9/22-9/25 we learned of even more oppressors of the Philippines, this time in WW2. Japan not only attacked the U.S but the Philippines too, instead of helping the Philippines Americans backed out and promised to comeback. With General Macarthur, leading the U.S troops back to fight the war at home he never made good on his promise. Instead the U.S came in time to oppress Filipinos and exploit them for cheap labor along with the countries natural resources. With this change came poverty for the country its oppressor did not only cause the problem but gave them a solution like that benefits Americans as always. Americans established the same learning systems and used them in the Philippines creating nurses to for their own use. These Filipino nurses were then brought to America and exploited for their cheap labor so they could have a better life and send money back home. This oppression and exploitation is still very alive.
Tuesday 9/22/15 Class on Tuesday September 22,2015, we were taught the section called Philippine American War. In class we were assigned a picture and from the picture we were assigned to discuss what our picture means or shows. For our picture, we can see that there is a American shown punishing a Filipino. The concept of that picture shows that the U.S wants the Filipino to let go of their culture and adapt to the U.S culture. In class we also discussed the three type of genocide, which is Physical, Biological, and Cultural.(mike) (cont. from Tuesday 9/22/15) |
